Simulating fission power change correctly during boiling seems essential to estimate the total fission energy. Fission power during boiling changes depending on fissile concentration and volume as the solution evaporates. In this study, we investigated the effect of concentration and volume change on estimated total fission energy for a long time of boiling. We introduced a model calculating the evaporation of fissile solution into the modified quasi-steady-state method to simulate power change during boiling. Three CRAC experiments and the Idaho Chemical Processing Plant (ICPP) criticality accident in 1959 were analyzed. As a result, the calculated energy considering concentration and volume change during boiling reproduced the measured energy well.

The tissue absorbed dose can be derived from the ambient dose equivalent given by measurement with a TLD using the conversion factor given by computation. Using this technique, the neutron dose around the SILENE reactor of the Institute for Radioprotection and Nuclear Safety (IRSN) of France was measured in the Accident Dosimetry Intercomparison Exercise (June 10-21, 2002) organized by OECD/NEA and IRSN. In this exercise, the dose was also measured with a TLD. In this report, measurements and evaluation results at TRACY and SILENE are presented.

This problem is a consequence that water contents of concrete in LLW drums contained deuterium (D) in quantities more than 0.1% of fissile material mass, therefore they are not excepted from packages containing fissile material. Consideration of differences in the absorption cross sections of light hydrogen and D shows that the relative increase in the neutron multiplication factor by a presence of D in natural water for hydrogen (H)-moderated systems is not larger than 0.015%. A numerical calculation confirms that the infinite multiplication factor of a mixture of U-metal and water in a U/H mass ratio of 5% increases proportionally to the D/H atomic ratio, and that its relative increase is less than 0.03% for the D/H atomic ratio of 0.015%. The limiting fissile-to-H mass ratio of 5% in the exception rule is concluded to be applicable to H-moderated systems including D in natural water.

The original method used the critical equation based on the one-group theory to calculate the reactivity. However, the one-group approximation reduces the calculation accuracy and the geometrical buckling used in the critical equation is not applicable to complex geometries. Then, we have modified the method to use the feedback coefficients of reactivity. Although the modified method requires an external calculation to obtain the feedback coefficients, it is applicable to complex geometries and gives more accurate results than the one-group approximation. Moreover, a new method to calculate the boiling power has been developed. using the experimental data of a supercritical experiment facility, SILENE. Experimental analyses were conducted to validate the new method for supercritical xperiments using CRAC and TRACY. The results showed good agreements with the experiments.
